The total volume of the internal mixer is the closed area composed of the internal mixing chamber, the upper/top ram piston and the end plates on both sides of the rotor, minus the net volume left by the two rotors, as shown in the white part of the inverted 8 in the figure. Roughly, it is like the volume of water can be poured in under working conditions.
What we usually say, such as 110L, 270L internal mixer, refers to the total volume. Because the material has to flow, it cannot be 100% filled. Therefore, the actual total working volume of rubber mixing is small.
The concept of filling factor needs to be introduced here. The size of the filling factor is related to the rotor type, formula, process parameters, etc., and cannot be generalized! Generally, the tangent rotor is taken as 0.75, and the intermesh rotor is taken as 0.65 generally.
